Antipsychotics and the Real World
Physicians treating patients in "the real world" deal with clinical problems
beyond the scientific literature: how do we treat elderly patients with atypical
antipsychotic medications? What are indications and appropriate dosages of
new medications in children and adolescents? When should the new antipsy-chotics
be used in patients with comorbid illnesses? Frequently, participants
in research projects are not as complex as patients who seek our treatment
in the real world. The applicability of results from clinical trials findings to
these real world situations is difficult to know.
This series of presentations In "Real World Grand Rounds" will inform clini-cians
about current knowledge regarding the management of psychotic disor-ders
in a broad range of contexts. Dr. Tune will focus on the agents and
approaches that are useful in the management of psychosis in the elderly. To
address the opposite end of the lifespan, Dr. McGough will review the latest
information concerning the treatment of children and adolescent patients.
The issue of studying the management of psychosis through naturalistic treat-ment
trials will reviewed by Dr. Potkin.
